What Is the Star Wars High Republic Reading Order? (Updated for Phase II – Wave 1)

Looking to get into the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia series but not sure where to start? You aren’t alone. One of the most ambitious storytelling projects in Star Wars, knowing what order you should read the High Republic books in is confusing. Whether you are just starting the series or you are trying to figure out which book to read next, here is everything you need to know about Star Wars: The High Republic reading order.

Spoiler Warning: While the article is largely spoiler free, there are a few story references in this article. What is Star War: The High Republic?

Although often considered a book series, Star Wars: The High Republic is an ongoing multimedia project of interconnected stories. The series features adult novels, junior novels, young readers, comic series, comic miniseries, comic one-shots, comic short stories, audio dramas, short stories, manga, and reference books. Many of the stories take place at the same time, following a growing cast of characters through related events.

The High Republic series is a collaboration between the Lucasfilm Story Group, members of the Lucasfilm publishing and licensing teams, and a pool of writers and storytellers. The original writers announced for the series were Claudia Gray, Justina Ireland, Daniel José Older, Cavan Scott, and Charles Soule. The list of authors has grown with each wave and now includes 13 storytellers, along with countless artists, illustrators, and editors.

 

The series was first teased as Project Luminous at Star Wars Celebration Chicago on Monday, April 15, 2019. The High Republic series was officially announced on Monday, February 24, 2020. The release was planned to coincide with Star Wars Celebration Anaheim in August 2020. However, the series debut was delayed until 2021 due to manufacturing delays related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

So far, there are three phases in The High Republic series, with each having multiple waves of releases. Phase I: The Light of the Jedi began on Tuesday, January 5, 2021. Featuring more than 70 individual stories in three waves, the bulk of the first phase of content ended in March 2022.

Phase II: Quest of the Jedi was announced on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, with the first story coming out in September 2022. Spread across two waves of material, this phase features 35 released or announced titles to date. A subsequent Phase III, titled Trials of the Jedi, is planned for November 2023.

How Do You Read the Star Wars The High Republic Books in Order?

Unfortunately, reading The High Republic books in order is a bit complicated for several reasons. First, there are multiple phases of the story. And each phase has multiple waves of content. There is a main story within each wave, with the other materials telling stories about related characters and events.

Second, the books themselves were not released in chronological order. They make sense within each wave, but it can be confusing if you did not start the series when it first came out.

Thirdly, each Phase tells stories about a grown list of characters. Different books or materials cover the storyline for that character, so reading them out of order can be disorienting.

Lastly, Phase II is actually a prequel to Phase I, so skipping between the two can be extremely confusing. This is especially true since many of the plotlines are related, despite the large time gap between them.

 

Ultimately, The High Republic is an anthology series like the early seasons of The Clone Wars 2008 animated TV series. Although each story stands on its own, they are interconnected and share many characters and plot points. Reading them out of order won’t spoil the overarching High Republic story, but it can spoil some of the character development and minor plot points.

Phase I: Light of the Jedi Reading Order

Phase I of The High Republic series takes place 200 years before the events of the Skywalker Saga. Set between 232 BBY and 230 BBY in the Star Wars timeline, the stories follow the paths of several Jedi Masters, Knights, and Padawans as they face a mysterious new enemy. The stories also focus on a number of villains and non-Jedi characters.

There were three waves of books and materials in the Light of the Jedi phase. Each wave contains a primary novel that focuses on a main story event. The secondary books and other media then support that primary story.

Phase II: Quest of the Jedi Reading Order

Phase II of The High Republic is set 150 years before Phase I and 350 years before the Skywalker Saga. The stories take place around 384 BBY and build upon the tales of galactic expansion and hyperspace prospecting mentioned during Phase I.

Phase II has two waves of content. As with the first phase, each wave features an adult novel that sets the main story and tone. The subsequent stories expand on the stories and characters mentioned in the adult novel. Since Wave 1 is ongoing and more Wave 2 titles are expected, the exact chronological placement of each story may change.

Phase III: Trial of the Jedi Reading Order

With the exception of an anticipated release date of November 2023, there are no details about Phase III of the series yet. Since Phase II is still ongoing, it’s difficult to predict the future of the Star Wars: The High Republic series. While it could move back in time like Phase II, it seems equally likely that it could be a direct sequel to Phase I.
