Coffee first appeared in Star Wars in a 1982 Marvel Comic. Other variations of coffee later appeared in the Lando Calrissian books, The X-Wing series, The New Jedi Order series, and more. Caf has existed in Star Wars canon since 2014.

Is There Coffee in Star Wars?
Coffee does exist in Star Wars. It was first included in the short story “Blade Squadron” in Star Wars Insider 149.
Although released on April 22, 2014, three days before the canon reset, Star Wars Insider issue 149 is the May/June edition. As such, the story is considered canon.
Caf first appears in Star Wars: A New Dawn. Released on September 2, 2014, it is a Star Wars: Rebels origin novel by John Jackson Miller.
Unlike the old Expanded Universe (EU) where coffee and caf were separate, the short story “A Good Kiss” establishes them as the same in the current canon. The story was written by C.B. Lee for the anthology book From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back. It was released on November 10, 2020.
Coffee, caf, and a host of other analogs appeared in what is now the Legends continuity. Coffee first appeared in the Marvel Comic Star Wars 59, released on February 16, 1982.
Caf was introduced in as “caffa” in the short story “Hasty Exit” by Peter M. Schweighofer. It was included in the Shadows of the Empire Sourcebook, released in June 1996.
Caf, coffee, cafstim, coffeine, and several other variations appeared throughout the EU.
What Is Coffee Called In Star Wars?
There are more than a dozen names for coffee in Star Wars, but the most common is caf. Canonically, caf was first introduced in 2014 and has appeared consistently in Star Wars materials since.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge menus describe caf as “regular coffee” since its opening in 2019. Coffee and caf have been canonically interchangeable since 2020.
However, there are a number of related coffee-like beverages in Star Wars. The Vow of Silver Dawn introduced chocolate caf and Lytor caf.
Several other caffeine or coffee beverages appeared in canon Star Wars cookbooks.
In what is now Star Wars Legends, coffee and caf were separate. Coffee appeared as early as 1982, while caf first appeared in 1996.
The term Coffeine appeared in the 1983 Lando Calrissian novels by L. Neil Smith and other Star Wars stories. Vine-coffee appeared in the 1995 novel Children of the Jedi by Barbara Hambly.
Several other terms were used in other Star Wars EU stories.
Canon Star Wars Coffee Beverages
Aside from caf and coffee, here are the other coffee beverages that appear in Star Wars canon:
- Black Spire Brew – A cold brew variant available at Oga’s Cantina in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at the Disney Parks.
- Chocolate Coffee – A variant of coffee, presumably with chocolate, first introduced in The Vow of Silver Dawn by His Majesty the King.
- Cold Brew Black Caf – A cold brew with Coco Puffs cereal on top available in Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland and Disney World. You can also get a spiked version at Disney World that includes Godiva Chocolate Liqueur.
- Hyperspace Brew – A strong type of caf served cold, first introduced in Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook by Jenn Fujikawa and Marc Sumerak.
- Lytor Caf – A variant of caf made with tiramisu, first introduced in The Vow of Silver Dawn by His Majesty the King.
- Self-heating Caf – A variant of caf specifically designed to warm itself, first mentioned in the junior novel Servants of the Empire: The Secret Academy by Jason Fry.
- Spiran Caf – A variant of caf that includes alcohol. The beverage first appeared in Star Wars: Rebels and later appeared at Oga’s Cantina at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. It was discontinued at Oga’s in March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Sunrise Caf – A spiced variant of caf from the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook by Chelsea Monroe-Cassel and Marc Sumerak.
- Thuris Caf – An iced variant of caf, introduced in Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook by Jenn Fujikawa and Marc Sumerak.
Star Wars Coffee in Legends
Caf and coffee were different in Legends. However, there were many different coffee analogs or caffeine beverages in the EU.
- Caf – A weak stimulant beverage brewed from the bean native to Garqi and Charra.
- Cafstim – A hot beverage similar to coffee, introduced in the short story “Whiskers” by Timothy S. O’Brien from the 1997 Rules of Engagement: The Rebel SpecForce Handbook.
- Coffee – An extremely hot beverage brewed from a specific bean.
- Coffeine (or coffine) – A expensive variant of vine-coffeine, it was known to alter the mood of the drinker. It first appeared in the 1983 novel Lando Calrissian and the Mindharp of Sharu by L. Neil Smith.
- Espcaf – A concentrated variant of caf that first appeared in the 1996 novel X-Wing: Wedge’s Gamble by Michael A. Stackpole.
- Half-caf – A variant of caf served at Dex’s Diner on Coruscant and served Bantha cream and Christophsian sugar for 1.5 credits. It originates in a 2009 Hyperspace fan club short story “Dining at Dex’s” by Gregory Walker.
- Regular caf – Likely an analog for “caf,” first introduced in the Hyperspace fan club short story “Dining at Dex’s.”
- Stimcaf – A warm beverage that seemingly contained a large amount of caffeine. It was introduced in the 2001 novel The New Jedi Order: Edge of Victory II: Rebirth by Greg Keyes.
- Vine-caf – A beverage introduced in the 2012 video game Kinect Star Wars.
- Vine-coffee – A notoriously hard-to-grow variety of coffee first introduced in the 1995 Barbara Hambly novel Children of the Jedi. Emperor Palpatine owned vine-coffee farms used specifically for his Court.
- Vine-coffeine – An expensive coffeine variant first introduced in the 1997 novel The Paradise Snare by A. C. Crispin.
Are There Star Wars Coffees?
When it comes to Star Wars coffees, there are three official products.
Disney has served caf in the park since the 2019 opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
There are four coffees in Galaxy’s Edge: regular coffee, cold brew black caf, spiked cold brew black caf, and Black Spire brew. The spiked cold brew is only available at Disney World in Florida.
When it first opened, Oga’s Cantina also served Spiran Caf, a spiked hot coffee with orange marmalade. It was discontinued in March 2020.
Since 2023, Joffrey’s Coffee & Tea Co. has sold Star Wars-branded coffees. Although not coffee, the Nestlé brand Coffee-mate released a series of limited edition Star Wars coffee cream bottles in 2015.
However, fans of the series have created custom coffee recipes. Also, some coffee roasters have released unofficial coffees base on the Star Wars universe.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Coffees
Since 2019, the Disney parks have served hot coffee in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Called caf, it is available during breakfast at both Ronto Roasters and Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo.
In 2021, Disneyland introduced the Cold Brew Black Caf at Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. The cold-brewed coffee beverage featured sweet cream cheese and Cocoa Puffs cereal.
The Cold Brew Black Caf was added to the menu at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Disney World in 2022. It is available at Kat Saka’s Kettle as both a non-alcoholic and an alcoholic beverage.
The Cold Brew Black Caf is listed as using Joffrey’s Coffee, but the standard Black Caf is only listed as regular coffee.
Still, it is assumed that the caf is also Joffrey’s Coffee since they provide the coffee for the Disney Parks.

In March of 2023, Joffrey’s introduced the Precious Cargo Blend featuring Grogu on the packaging. The coffee was a marketing tie-in with The Mandalorian.
In November of 2023, they introduced the limited edition blend Up To Snow Good Brew. The packaging features a Grogu in a Santa-style costume. As of February 2024, it was still available from their store.
Coffee-Mate Limited-Edition Star Wars Creamer Bottles
Disney and Nestlé partnered in 2015 for a limited run of Star Wars-themed Coffee-mate creamer. While the bottles featured Star Wars characters, the flavors where all regular Coffee-mate products.
The French Vanilla was branded as R2-D2. C-3PO was on the hazelnut bottle. The Italian Sweet Cream bottle was Boba Fett. Darth Vader was on the Expresso Chocolate creamer bottle, while Chewbacca appeared on Spiced Latte.
The French Vanilla, Hazelnut, and Italian Sweet Cream flavors are regularly available, just without the Star Wars-branding. The Expresso Chocolate and Spiced Latte are seasonal or limited release flavors that are available intermittently.
